Indonesia Furniture Design Competition II (IFDC II)The Second Indonesia Furniture Design Competition (IFDC II) which was initiated by The American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) presented a Coffee Table category that attracted 290 participants with 379 designs. With such number, there was an increase of 200% compared to last year's competition, no wonder that the jury that was chaired by Lea A. Aziz, and its members comprising Dwight Kiswandono, Gregorius S. Yolodi, Michael Buckley, Prieyo Pratomo, and R. Moch. Reffrajaya Hariadi had to work hard to choose the fifteen finalists within the existing timeline. Until the end of the selection phase, there were 379 designs collected in total, which were divided into three categories namely professional, general and student. As much as 102 participants with 199 designs participated in the student category. As much as 112 participants with 143 designs participated in the general category. And as much as 86 participants with 117 designs participated in the professional category. Its participants are not limited to cities that are already known as centers for woodworking and furniture, on the other hand there were participants who came from Banda Aceh, Tengarong East Kalimantan, and Palu Central Sulawesi. Participants from Jakarta constituted a majority with 67 participants, or around 23.10% of the total participants. This was followed by participants from Tangerang, both from Tangerang Municipal, Tangerang Regency and South Tangerang Regency that reached 12.07%. They were followed by participants from Bandung Municipal and Regency that reached 11.72%. Next came participants from Jepara that reached 33 participants or 11.38%. Yogyakarta occupied the next rank with 29 participants or 10.00%. Prior to the jury meeting which was convened on February 17 at Grand Kemang Hotel, the jury took their time to see the 379 designs exhibited at Zendar room. In addition to the six judges, John Chan and Sharon Shrek, the representatives from the regional office of AHEC in Hong Kong were also present. The Chairman of the Committee of the second IFDC and the Chief Editor of WoodMag, Arief Odon presented a brief report on the selection process of the submitted designs. According to him, the current number of participants was exceptional and totally unexpected. Some of the finalists of the first IFDC, even those who had achieved awards such as Devi Khoirudin and Wiki Winarta had submitted their works in this competition. Upon deciding on the fifteen finalists, the jury entered the special selection phase for the student category. It is not an easy task to select 119 works submitted by 102 students from various universities. Some of the judges who taught in a number of universities still see the dominance of trial and error in a number of submitted works. This makes it difficult to create it, not to mention the weak fulfillment of marketable factor for this category. However, after spending quite some time, the jury agreed to nominate "Linked Table" a work by Devi Gunawan, a student from Pelita Harapan University from Bekasi. |
