Dr. Philip H. Mitchell

BACKGROUND

After getting his Ph.D in Forestry and Forest Products at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, Dr. Mitchell went on to work for the Mississippi Forest Products Lab, where he supervised and taught programs on lumber drying, managed the laboratory's dry kiln and boiler facility and established the Mid-South Dry Kiln Association. From there, he moved on to work as a research scientist and, later, an environmental engineer with Weyerhaeuser Company. He managed and implemented projects designed to improve the lumber drying process. As an environmental engineer with Weyerhaeuser, he focused on the economic and environmental benefits of waste minimization. Since 1996, he has worked as an associated professor and extension specialist with North Carolina State University, developing educational programs that address the needs of the secondary wood products industry in North Carolina. Areas of expertise include rough mill improvement, improved furniture manufacturing, and moisture content, among many other topics.
